Leonie came to the Bowen Clinic to see if the technique could help with her very painful shoulder. I remember her first phone call to me. It was obvious she was in a lot of pain. She had recently received a cortizone shot from her doctor but the pain had returned with a vengence. She was ready to try anything except another shot.

I answered the door to this woman carrying numerous heavy bags as she was on her way home from work. She is an Early Years Visitor and visits families with pre-school children for many reasons, some have delayed learning, delayed speech,autism etc. (hence the heavy toys in her bags). Leonie was obviously in pain and I was a little shocked when she turned up on the doorstep with these heavy bags . She had difficulty lying on the massage couch in some positions due to the shoulder restriction. I gave her her first treatment and watched her leave carrying the same heavy bags she arrived with.  I showed her some very simple, basic shoulder exercises that have shown to be of help after a treatment. They take only about 5 minutes to complete. Leonie had been doing these and she had a second treatment. On her second visit she was off work with a twisted ankle which she also received Bowen for along with her shoulder issue.

I recently undertook training with Howard Plummer and Helen Watson learning Howard’s Facial Bowen Technique. To say this was a transformational experience with regards to my Bowen practice would be an understatement.

Howard and Helen’s work is proving to be remarkable on it’s effects with children with cerebral palsy, Asperger’s Syndrome, ADHD and autistic difficulties. Having treated hundreds of children at their clinic in Cardiff there is well-documented evidence of Bowen’s positive effects for these conditions. Howard and Helen have taught this technique to many Bowen practitioners who have gone on to run their own clinics for these children with special needs. It was whilst working with Rita Eccles in Lewes, East Sussex, that I was inspired to persue Howard’s work.
