Free Bowen for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Texas

Abilene Man Offers Free PTSD Treatment

Reported by: Megan DobbsTuesday, Feb 2, 2010 @10:00pm CST

The Bowen technique is a natural health technique that’s been used for years to treat numerous injuries and illnesses.  Now it’s being used to treat post traumatic stress disorder in service men and women returning from combat back to civilian life.

At Abilene’s Bowtech for Health, Neil Hall wants to use to use the technique to help local airmen overcome PTSD and successfully adjust to life here in Abilene.

Neil says he’s willing to give free PTSD treatments to about five local service men or women.

Offering the Bowen technique as a way to treat PTSD in our local airmen allows Neil to do what he loves while repay them for the many ways they serve us, Hall said.

Bowen for Infertility

Below is an excerpt from the January/February 2010 Issue of  ‘Ethical Living’ Magazine regarding Bowen and how it may aid with Infertility.

…Bowen therapy has also been used to aid in fertility problems, as experienced by Sharron Strong, 39, a firefighter from Milton Keynes. Having suffered for years with endometriosis, was uncertain of her ability to conceive naturally. After more than one operation to remove the endometriosis, Sharron was eventually considered for a hysterectomy, and she and her partner Harvey began to investigate adoption as their final chance to start a family. It was earlier this year, while attending a yoga class in her village – run by therapist Beryl Whiting – that she first heard about the Bowen Technique.

‘[Beryl] mentioned that one of her Bowen patients had just given birth after three failed IVF treatments,’ explains Sharron. ‘At the time I had never heard of Bowen treatment and immediately after the class I talked to Beryl to learn more.’…

…‘During the third session Beryl said she was going to ‘open up’ the pelvic region.’ She adds, ‘Something must have worked because I could hardly walk for three days afterwards, but I fell pregnant during that time. I understand now that the mind and energy in the body have a physical affect on your
body.’…

Bowen Technique helps shoulder problem

Painful Shoulder

Leonie came to the Bowen Clinic to see if the technique could help with her very painful shoulder. I remember her first phone call to me. It was obvious she was in a lot of pain. She had recently received a cortizone shot from her doctor but the pain had returned with a vengence. She was ready to try anything except another shot.

I answered the door to this woman carrying numerous heavy bags as she was on her way home from work. She is an Early Years Visitor and visits families with pre-school children for many reasons, some have delayed learning, delayed speech, autism etc. (hence the heavy toys in her bags). Leonie was obviously in pain and I was a little shocked when she turned up on the doorstep with these heavy bags . She had difficulty lying on the massage couch in some positions due to the shoulder restriction. I gave her her first treatment and watched her leave carrying the same heavy bags she arrived with.  I showed her some very simple, basic shoulder exercises that have shown to be of help after a treatment. They take only about 5 minutes to complete. Leonie had been doing these and she had a second treatment. On her second visit she was off work with a twisted ankle which she also received Bowen for along with her shoulder issue.

Pain Free in Two Sessions

She booked in for the following week but later cancelled the treatment as she had a prior engagement she had forgotten about. I ask all my clients to commit mentally to 4 treatments. This is to allow the technique time to work and integrate into the body. A lot of our injuries did not just happen overnight and cannot be expected to disappear overnight….however, having said this, I have seen amazing results with the Bowen Technique after one or two sessions. Leonie is apparently one of these.

Testimonial

Below is her email to me a few weeks later.

Hello Jackie

I am very grateful to you because my shoulder problem appears to be cured. I have been symptom free since my 2nd session with you.

I am totally amazed because I had been suffering for about 5 months. As you know I did have a steroid injection in my shoulder 6 days prior to my first Bowen session with you and a subsequent MRI scan showed that I have  inflammation of the supraspinatus tendon with a small partial thickness tear. However I now have no pain and have recently started Body Pump classes again.

Thank you soooooo much. I will definately be recommending you to all of my friends and colleagues in the future.

Best Wishes
Leonie

When I asked leonie for her permission to publish her email as a testimonial she added;

“I am pleased to say that my shoulder and ankle are now completely fine despite the heavy bags, moving furniture for my groups and body pump!!! ”

The Power Of Bowenwork for a Recent Injury

Bowenwork never ceases to amaze me. The moves keep on working in the body long after the treatments have been made. The above testimonial is a wonderful example of just how effective a Bowen session can be. It certainly doesn’t mean it will be as effective in such a short period of time for everyone but the potential is there.

Leonie also received treatment for her ankle within days of the injury. This is ideal as the body was given new information through the Bowen treatment that the danger was over and a new pattern was established in her body that made it feel safe enough to not have to guard the injury any longer than necessary. By doing this, other compensatory patterns were not set up in her body creating the potential for future problems down the road.

Thanks to Leonie for her permission to publish her sessions but also for reinforcing in my mind the powerful effectiveness of this healing technique.

Thanks for getting Bowen Technique out there Janey!

Many thanks to Janey Lee Grace

Janey Lee Grace is dedicated to bringing awareness and healthly choices to the UK population. Actually this is the World Wide Web so I should perhaps rephrase that and say the World!

Her website imperfectlynatural.com is a mine of information full of  links and resources to aid us to a better way of living and understanding of the human condition.

You will find a vast array of lotions, potions, techniques and articles to browse through. There is something for everyone. Some you will find interesting, perhaps some a little obscure and perhaps even unbelievable. The point is, is that Janey is a well known personality who is not afraid to leave a stone unturned at the risk of her reputation. Judgement is left aside. Take your pick and use what works for you.

Janey has been, and continues to be, a great proponant of Bowen Technique having used it herself during her own pregnancy to help heal her aching back.

She has kindly added the recent article written here on this blog, Bra’s, Breast Cancer and Bowen, to her features page on her website. Her site receives enormous amounts of traffic and so on behalf of the Bowen practitioners around the World I would like to say thank you for giving us the exposure this therapy deserves.

Bowen Technique for Cerebral Palsy, Aspergers Syndrome, ADHD and other delayed development and learning difficulties

Howard Plummer’s Fascial Bowen Technique

I recently undertook training with Howard Plummer and Helen Watson learning Howard’s Facial Bowen Technique. To say this was a transformational experience with regards to my Bowen practice would be an understatement.

Howard and Helen’s work is proving to be remarkable on it’s effects with children with cerebral palsy, Asperger’s Syndrome, ADHD and autistic difficulties. Having treated hundreds of children at their clinic in Cardiff there is well-documented evidence of Bowen’s positive effects for these conditions. Please refer to the testimonial at the bottom of this post. Howard and Helen have taught this technique to many Bowen practitioners who have gone on to run their own clinics for these children with special needs. It was whilst working with Rita Eccles in Lewes, East Sussex, that I was inspired to persue Howard’s work.

Although most of their research is with children, the technique is also beneficial to adults.

Note:- Touch (a separate post to follow on this subject) is often important to Autistic/Aspergers children. They often find it soothing and want to sit near/against you, or lean against you which gives us, as Bowen practitioners, the chance to work on their back or neck or whatever areas present themselves when they have difficulty keeping still.

Benefits noted by parents at the Cardiff clinic

  • Clumsiness – improved balance/co-ordination
  • Spine straightening, often dramatic
  • Improved motor control e.g. holding up head more; starting to roll over; grasping things
  • Constipation/nutritional body development
  • Vocalization/verbalization
  • Limb aches and pains reduced
  • Concentration/attention improves at home and school. Greater comprehension
  • Behavioural improvements – Timidity and aversion to school/shops etc. lessened. Can make friends easier
  • Less frustrated, calmer, quieter – happier child
  • Sleep patterns improved
  • Chewing/sucking stronger
  • Plus the usual benefits of Bowen
  • Aversity to lying on back or front quickly reversed

Benefits of Bowen Technique observed at the Cardiff clinic

  • Quieter, happier children
  • Better concentration
  • Some play engendered/and with pets
  • Loss of some obsessive/repetitive behaviour
  • Sleep patterns greatly improved
  • Rage episodes lessened
  • Abusive behaviour much reduced on self/property
  • More instances of language use
  • More eye contact – coming out into the world
  • Parents’ load relieved – family togetherness enhanced

How is the Fascial Bowen Technique achieving these results?

The theory is that the sensory stimulation may be helping and accelerating the  ‘re-wiring’  in the brain to compensate for damaged areas.

The Fascial Bowen moves are very light superficial moves over the areas of the skin along what are known as the dermatomes. Simply put, a dermatome is an area of skin supplied by nerve fibers from a single dorsal root and its ganglion i.e. from the area of dermatome C4 ( the area at the base of the neck) the nerve fibers spread out across the shoulders to the upper arm. An example would be shingles (herpes zoster), which lodges in a spinal or cranial root, radiating out along the area of the skin (dermatome)  innervated by those nerve fibers.

Beneath our skin is what is known as the superficial fascia, a layer of connective tissue not unlike the silverskin on a piece of chicken or a side of beef, to give, hopefully, a simple analogy. This connective tissue is a fluid system. It is vital that it is kept hydrated and therefore oxygentated,  otherwise it can become dry and constricting to the underlying muscles and organs it envelopes. There is much recent research into the importance of fascia and connective tissue. We are finding that it is a fascinating intelligent communictaion system. “This points to the intimate relationship between the superficial sensory function and the deep tissues and organs of the body. I (Howard Plummer) believe this is the most important factor, which gives fascia Bowen it’s potency. To touch the surface is to stir the depths.

There are two papers that point to why Bowen seems to be beneficial:-

(Nelson and Ellenborg 1982)
A diagnosis of cerebral palsy was made for 229 one-year-old children enrolled in a large longitudinal study. Of these children, 118 were free of motor handicap at the age of 7 years. Mild early cerebral palsy, and the monoparetic, ataxic/dyskinetic, and diplegic forms of the disorder, resolved with high frequency.”

(Eyre 2004)
Can the brain be ‘re-wired to help children overcome disability?”
This was a two year research programme funded by the charity Action Medical Research. It’s findings show that the infant brain has a natural capacity to transfer vital functions away from the damaged area when there has been brain damage either before birth or at birth. Researchers were convinced that it is critical to act as early as possible, before the brains plasticity diminishes and to discover how this ‘re-wiring’ process can be encouraged in order to give damaged or cerebral palsy children the chance to recover from lost movement control as soon as possible.

Prevalance of cerebral palsy

2 in 1000 live births – cerebral palsy. But many mild cases are undiagnosed
5 in 1000 live births – dyspraxia. Co-ordination of movement

Conclusion

It would therefore seem vital that children with cerebral palsy and other delayed developmental conditions receive treatment as soon as possible. In fact, should all children receive this beneficial modality after the trauma of birth?

Testimonial from Howard’s Cardiff clinic

Ben is 15 months old.
He has had 10 sessions of Bowen so far.
His first couple of sessions were weekly, then he progressed to the fortnightly clinic.

He suffered oxygen depravation at birth and was diagnosed at 9 months with Cerebral Palsy.

Ben’s body was very stiff.
He locked his legs whenever he tried to do anything with his head, arms or torso.
His body was almost always tensed up and his hands were clenched into fists most of the time.
He would strongly object whenever we tried to turn him onto his front or encouage him to try any unfamiliar movements.

We took Ben for his first Bowen session when he was just under a year old.
He relaxed almost immediatley and tolerated being on his front for much longer than he had before.
He even managed to last for almost a whole hour on his front during only his third session – before Bowen he would last a maximum of 30 seconds before crying.

On the way home in the car after the first session he opened his arms wide and grasped the handle of his maxi-cosy with each hand – this was the first time he had ever done this.

The improvements we have seen since he has been attending have included:

  • Better control of his arms and legs
  • The opening up of his hands and improved dexterity
  • A reduction in his overall stiffness
  • Reduction in the ‘locking’ of his body
  • Improved tolerance of different positions and movements
  • Improvements in his chewing and eating
  • Better head control
  • He no longer coughs during and after food or drink

We can attribute the above improvements to Bowen because each occured after the relevant session, i.e. if an area was concentrated on during a session, then that area would noticeably improve either immediately or in the following days.

To conclude, overall Bowen has helped Ben’s body to relax and his movements to become more fluid. He has better control over his body and his balance has improved significantly. On the rare occasions that Ben becomes distressed, he no longer tenses up in the way that he used to.

Ben really seems to relax and enjoy each session.

We are very happy with the way he has responded to Bowen and would strongly recommend it to others.

As far as we are concerned, Ben will continue to attend the clinic for as long as it remains beneficial to him.

With thanks to you all,

John Coleman benefits from Bowen Technique in his recovery from Parkinsons Disease

Where do I start with this post. This is not really a question so much as a statement.

I have seen nothing short of miracles as a result of various peoples experiences with Bowen Technique, but I also know that the technique alone cannot be credited wholly with the amazing stories of  ‘recovery to Health.’ I write the word health with a capital ‘H’ for a reason, but that is  for another article down the road.

One such experience is that of John Coleman.  John used the Bown Technique as part of his recovery protocol  from Parkinsons and I contacted him recently to ask his permission to publish his story. He kindly granted that permission but with the following provisos;

Bowen was an important part of my recovery process, but not THE MOST important part. We estimate that 80% of recovery comes from individual effort and dedication to the process. Of the remaining 20%, about 65% was the Aquas and 25% Bowen (i.e about 5% of the whole process). So I wouldn’t want to see statements like “John Coleman recovered using Bowen” or similar. I am happy to say that Bowen was the most helpful form of bodywork and assisted in cell hydration or something like that.”

The Importance of Cell Hydration

John touches on a most important point in the above statement and that is the hydration of the cells in our body. Bowen works with the fascia of the body and we are directly stimulating this important communication system.

The following excerpt is from John’s website www.returntostillness.com

John’s Story

In 1995, John Coleman was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease by five practitioners (including three medical practitioners).

By August 1995, John was suffering from Stage IV Parkinson’s Disease and early Multi-System Atrophy, had lost his power of speech, was unable to walk 5 metres without assistance, and took an hour and a half to get dressed. Severely dissatisfied with western medical treatment and prognosis, John decided to pursue other methods…

“Several Bowen treatments later, I folded my arms with minimum discomfort and felt my energy returning. I knew that I had only one more small step to take to achieve health.”

This is an article  about a man’s amazing life affirming process. He took responsibility for himself and the path he chose included Bowen Therapy amongst many other healing modalities.

Bowen Technique Helps Free Frozen Shoulder

Testimonial on Frozen Shoulder improvements after Bowen treatment

“My shoulders started bothering me. After months of pain that kept getting worse, I was diagnosed with a frozen shoulder. I received two cortizone shots in my shoulders and was given exercises to do. It didn’t have any effect. So I was sent for physical therapy. After 12 painful sessions of therapy they said they had done all they could, which wasn’t much. My doctor then said he could break loose the shoulders with force. I decided to try the Bowen Technique. After one session of the Bowen Technique, with Jackie, I started getting more mobility and less pain. After the 2nd session, and simple, easy exercises my mobility was improved almost 50%. After my 4th session I’m about 90% improved. I am amazed that such a non invasive procedure could have such a positive effect.”
Robin Fl USA

Robin was working as a waitress at the time, and carrying heavy plates of food for hours on end just added to her pain by the end of her shift.

Robin was my first case study whilst I was training in the Bowen Technique. She was at the end of her rope and was willing to try anything in order to avoid forceful manipulation of her shoulder joint.

Sleep Improved with Bowen Treatment

After Robins first session her sleep improved. It was about a week after her 4th session that I received a phone call early one morning and heard Robin excitedly telling me how she had only been able to lift her shoulder to 90 degrees the previous evening before going to bed but that when she got up the following morning she could raise it up over her head. It was as if the shoulder literally just let go at some point through the night.

Janey Lee Grace loves Bowen Technique

“A fairly well kept secret and the one that was a revelation for me was….The Bowen Technique”

…Go with me back to 1999, I was one of those women who was due to have millennium baby (and no it was not planned that way!) I was 7 months gone, and on my way to co host on ‘Steve Wright in the Afternoon’ for the BBC. Up until this point I’d been literally ‘blooming marvellous.’ but for the first time in my life (without revealing my age, save to say the hospital records showed ‘Primagravida’) I was racked by excruciating back pain. It hurt like hell. I could barely walk, let alone lift anything, and it felt like I was dragging round a huge ball and chain…

Brighton Low-Cost Bowen Therapy Clinic

Making Bowen Therapy affordable to everyone

Beginning Monday June 1st, I will be offering a low-cost Bowen Therapy Clinic at the Anahata Health Clinic 19/129 Edward St, Brighton, BN2 OJL.

This will be a multi-bed clinic set up in the yoga studio downstairs.

The cost will be £18 instead of the average £30-£45 for the Brighton area.

You can contact me for an appointment on 0750 3027773.

Bowen Therapy is usually performed on a client in their own private room. The practitioner leaves the room in between sets of moves for a few minutes so the body can integrate the information it has been given. I plan to utilize this time by working on more than one client at a time therefore enabling me to charge less for the session.

Bowen Therapy can be done on the skin or through light clothing. For the low-cost clinic I ask my clients to wear light loose clothing to protect their privacy. I will also have the use of screens to put up between the massage couches.

I was inspired by a fellow Bowen Practitioner Tina Hutchings who has run a multi-bed low cost clinic in the Worthing area for some years now. Tina does not use the internet much but can be contacted at 01903 208916.

Bra’s, Breast Cancer and Bowen Therapy

The Moon Walk for Breast Cancer awareness is Saturday May 16th in London and the women will all be wearing pink bras. The group energy will be electrifying I am sure and there probably are not words to express the
empowerment these women will feel. The reason for this article though, is to bring awareness to the research that bras may actually contribute to, or even cause, breast cancer.  First let me point out that we are multi- faceted
beings and that there are many things that contribute to any state of dis-ease. It is once this state is entered that we then need to make choices that contribute to restoring balance and harmony in the body.

There have been some interesting observations made regarding the breast cancer rate amongst women who wear bras as opposed to those who do not.

Research

Singer and Grismaijer investigated and published their findings of the bra-wearing behavior of about 5000 women in their book ‘Dressed to Kill’ (Avery Press 1995).

  • Women who wore their bras 24 hours per day had a 3 out of 4 chance of developing breast cancer.
  • Women who wore bras rarely or never had a 1 out of 168 chance of getting breast cancer, about the same breast cancer rate for men.
  • Women who wore bras more than 12 hour per day but not to bed had a 1 out of 7 risk.
  • Women who wore their bras less than 12 hours per day had a 1 out of 152 risk.

The overall difference between 24 hour wearing and not at all was a 125-fold difference.

An even more common condition is fibrocystic breast disease, which is often a forerunner of breast cancer. This painful condition can be cured simply by not wearing a bra.

The Fluid Lymphatic System

There is a vast array of lymphatic nodes around the breasts and in the underarms.  As many people are aware, it is these very nodes that end up being operated on and removed. The lymphatic system is an extremely important system in the body that is not often talked about. It can be compared to a river that should flow clear and clean. When there is something blocking the flow of the river and the water has no where to go it becomes still and stagnant, inviting microrganisms in to flourish. Our lymphatic system works in a similar manner. It is responsible for the elimination of a lot of the toxic waste in our bodies. The lymph is not pumped through the body like blood, but is moved mostly by the contractions of skeletal muscles and the expansion and contraction of the lungs. It circulates throughout the body and drains into the subclavian veins, below the collar bone. Movement, moves lymph.

Self Help

A simple self-help technique is to gently massage into the hollow on each side of the breast bone and move the skin in various directions around this area. This will bring circulation to the underlying connective tissue stimulating blood flow. With increased blood flow comes increased nutrients and oxygenation to the tissues. Eventually you will notice the tenderness will decrease and disappear.

Also the hollow areas between the breastbone and the ribs can be stimulated in the same way. These areas correspond to what are known as the ‘Chapmans Reflex Points’, a series of points that can help stimulate normal function in the lymphatic and endocrine systems helping to supply the optimum amount of hormones necessary for the function of our body’s cells.

So it becomes obvious that free flowing movement is vital for good breast health. Look at the movement that occurs in a womans body when no bra is worn. This movement is vital for stimulating the lympthatic flow around the breast area. Breast feeding and pregnancy cause full development of the mammary lymphatics. Women who excercise have lower risk, probably due to better lymphatic circulation.

If you’ve ever travelled on a plane you may have experienced swelling of the feet and legs. This is due to restricted lymphatic flow during the flight and high altitiudes.

Obviously there are women who need support, but please be choosy in what kind of bra you wear. Underwire bras, even though physically flattering are the worst offenders. There is even evidence to suggest the metal used attracts EMF’s (electomagnetic frequencies) to this area of the body which may also contribute further problems.

Society’s fascination with a pair of boobs pushed up under our chins is purely conditioned and fashionable. With knowledge of how our bodies function comes a new way of looking at our physique which is  beautiful and alluring in it’s natural state.

Bowen therapy helps to stimualte the circulation in the body. There are moves that are specific to the breast area that can be easily shown and taught to both men and women to stimulate lymphatic flow and oxygenation in the area.
